Team Communication & Peer Support Domain Description
Team communication and peer support in healthcare encompasses the structured study of interpersonal and collective mechanisms that protect staff well-being and sustain safe clinical performance. The domain includes the foundations of psychological safety, communication under acute stress, peer support system design, conflict management in hierarchical settings, structured debriefing practices, and team-level primary prevention behaviours that buffer emotional strain and support collective resilience.
Healthcare work is rarely performed in isolation. Team dynamics, communication patterns, and peer support significantly influence stress levels, psychological safety, and overall well-being. Clear communication, for example during handovers or when delegating tasks, can reduce uncertainty and prevent duplication of work. This module explores how effective communication and structured peer support can buffer emotional strain, reduce conflict escalation, and strengthen team cohesion — particularly in high-pressure or multidisciplinary environments.
Participants are introduced to the concept of psychological safety, communication under pressure, and common conflict dynamics in hierarchical settings. Practical tools such as brief debriefing protocols, buddy systems, and structured conversation checklists are presented and practiced. The module emphasizes that peer support is not an informal “extra,” but a protective factor against burnout and disengagement.
Through role-play, guided reflection, and digital peer-debrief templates, participants develop practical strategies to initiate supportive conversations and implement short, structured check-ins that can be integrated into routine team workflows.

Total duration (varies depending on whether the two 15-20 min exercises are implemented as shorter or longer versions) |
Optional split into two sessions:
Session 1 (approx. 50-55 min): opening, input, Psychological Safety Check-In and debrief practice.
Session 2 (approx. 50-55 min): Buddy Check-In, scenario exercise, assessment and transfer/follow-up planning.
• Format: Interactive workshop combining didactic content, case analysis, self-reflection and videos.
• Materials: Introductory video link; module document or facilitator notes; brief scenario prompts based on the examples provided in the exercises; observer questions for psychologically safe communication; three-question debrief structure; buddy check-in prompts; scenario exercise text; multiple-choice knowledge check; portfolio evidence list; follow-up reflection prompts; timer or clock; and flipchart, whiteboard, or shared digital document for group synthesis.
• Follow-up Integration: Participants select one structured communication or peer-support strategy from the workshop, apply it at least twice in their workplace, and complete a 4-8 week reflection using the prompts provided in the Follow-up Activities section. The portfolio entry documents the situation, strategy used, observed team response, perceived effects on clarity, support and psychological safety, barriers encountered, and one practice the participant intends to continue. No additional standalone templates are required.

3Assessment 3This module requires practical application through structured assessment activities. Healthcare professionals must demonstrate competency through evidence-based evaluation methods that translate team communication theory into safe collective practice.

4Pilot Assessment
During the pilot sessions, the learning outcomes are assessed through a blended portfolio of practical methods. Each method specifies the activity participants complete, the evidence a trainer collects for the micro-credential portfolio, and the learning outcome it maps to.
