Team communication and peer support in healthcare encompasses the structured study of interpersonal and collective mechanisms that protect staff well-being and sustain safe clinical performance. The domain includes the foundations of psychological safety, communication under acute stress, peer support system design, conflict management in hierarchical settings, structured debriefing practices, and team-level primary prevention behaviours that buffer emotional strain and support collective resilience.

Healthcare work is rarely performed in isolation. Team dynamics, communication patterns, and peer support significantly influence stress levels, psychological safety, and overall well-being. Clear communication, for example during handovers or when delegating tasks, can reduce uncertainty and prevent duplication of work. This module explores how effective communication and structured peer support can buffer emotional strain, reduce conflict escalation, and strengthen team cohesion — particularly in high-pressure or multidisciplinary environments.

Participants are introduced to the concept of psychological safety, communication under pressure, and common conflict dynamics in hierarchical settings. Practical tools such as brief debriefing protocols, buddy systems, and structured conversation checklists are presented and practiced. The module emphasizes that peer support is not an informal “extra,” but a protective factor against burnout and disengagement.

Through role-play, guided reflection, and digital peer-debrief templates, participants develop practical strategies to initiate supportive conversations and implement short, structured check-ins that can be integrated into routine team workflows.
